We've forgotten that before we got so caught up with something else making noise for us that we--as a species--entertained ourselves by making noise: singing, chanting, sing-song story telling. For a really interesting view in old entertainment made by mouth alone, look into "mouth music" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YKWXJyrZGg)
It was meant to test your ability to keep the words flowing along to the music.Denise Domninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17222050066804938327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7983741341986557.post-20092734350823085482013-10-26T07:15:34.655-07:002013-10-26T07:15:34.655-07:00I loved the singing and the women working rhythm.I loved the singing and the women working rhythm.Jackie Leigh Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05007792561313409699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7983741341986557.post-49051405142231951162013-10-25T23:45:57.000-07:002013-10-25T23:45:57.000-07:00Hi Alexis, I'm so glad you enjoyed the article...Hi Alexis, I'm so glad you enjoyed the article. I'm with you about being born in the wrong era. I do love living out here in the boonies, where the sounds of modernity are limited.
DeniseDenise Domninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17222050066804938327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7983741341986557.post-7874057307096546962013-10-25T08:23:57.941-07:002013-10-25T08:23:57.941-07:00Thanks Barbara, there's something very groundi...Thanks Barbara, there's something very grounding about listening to birds. The beauty of it makes things seem right with the world. Of course, if we translated the songs they're singing it would work out to be "This is my property, my nest, my female. If you trespass, you will die." :-/
DeniseDenise Domninghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17222050066804938327noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7983741341986557.post-85544624540972646922013-10-25T06:08:10.928-07:002013-10-25T06:08:10.928-07:00Thank you, Regan, for bringing Denise to us.

I have it in my head, but I'm reluctant to devote as much time as you have to such a pursuit. So I write about romance in scientific history, but make it paranormal for fewer constraints.

But with your posting on sounds, I almost feel as if I've channeled into my characters past lives and experienced their life as they lived it.

You only mentioned smell once or twice, but the sounds, if we recognize them, bring with them the odors of the cacophonous life all around.

I was especially floored by the singing that accompanied work and the birds chattering nonstop in the trees. How different from the beeps and burps of our isolation in electronic technology.

Perhaps I was born in the wrong era.

Thank you for opening my ears to a wonderland of medieval sounds.Susan Burnshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15702244690723617799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7983741341986557.post-196528207685844022013-10-25T04:20:14.790-07:002013-10-25T04:20:14.790-07:00Thank you Denise and Regan. You had me with the opening about the birdsong - my husband and I love to wake on temperate Atlanta mornings and listen to the various birds awaken, too. Of course, road traffic is the background noise, but we pretend it's a river.
