Set
in 1865, this is the story of Helena Duncombe, Lady Chauncey, a courtesan
married to a violent, abusive man. Running from her husband, she escapes into a
church, a rectory, where Sir Julian Grey, the vicar, provides her sanctuary.
What Helena comes to realize is that Julian is no ordinary man of the cloth. He
is a spy engaged in some dangerous business with carrier pigeons sending
messages.
Julian
enlists Helena in his assignment to uncover a traitor to the crown and so begins
a delightful story of an unlikely love.
The
writing is superb, the characters interesting, the story intriguing. I only
wish there had been more story. Apparently this is an introduction of sorts to
the story of Helena’s daughter Sophia who shows up at the end with her new
husband. Just be prepared. You might want to read Sophia’s story first. It’s Song for Sophia.
